What makes for a great surf school in Portugal?
That is a very important question. While there are great surf schools everywhere, Portugal's surfing conditions make for some of the most enjoyable learning experiences. This is because the country concentrates what is probably the largest number of surf spots per square kilometre, owing to very unique geographical conditions and the wide exposure to Atlantic swells.
At the international level, Lagos in Algarve is widely recognized as one of the top spots for surf schooling, because while the location barely has any waves, it is less than an hour's drive from some amazing surf spots, like Arrifana or Praia do Amado. The same could be said about other locations like Ericeira or Espinho, but Lourinhã has its own advantages.
A seafront city just South of Peniche and Nazaré, to the north of Ericeira, Lourinhã is less than an hour away from Carcavelos, and that means that Lourinhã is in itself an amazing surf school destination in Portugal, because it's located very close to pretty much every conceivable surfing condition available in the world. This ranges from the giant waves of Nazaré to the perfect but generally safe waves around Lourinhã itself, particularly at Praia da Areia Branca that gathers smaller swells than what happens further up north in Nazaré.
Another issue is crowd. Some of the most popular surf spots are far too crowded these days, making it tough to find a spot in the water. In contrast, around Praia da Areia Branca crowds aren't generally an issue, and surf lessons can be had in relatively roomy conditions. If this doesn't happen, new spots are readily within range.
For a nice break from the water, Areia Branca also has very rich surroundings, with bike trails and trekking courses where you can observe some of the most fascinating wildlife in the country. Furthermore, Lourinhã itself, and Peniche further north, have even today a close relationship with the sea and fishery. Not only are locals fully embracing surf, but you are guaranteed some of the best cuisine in the country with plenty of fresh fish on your plate.
If you're looking for a surf school in Portugal for the upcoming summer, look no further than Lourinhã itself and bring your whole family.
